Food safety is a critical component of public health systems, directly influencing population health outcomes, healthcare costs, and national resilience. From a broad perspective, effective food safety practices encompass the entire food supply chain, including production, processing, distribution, retail, and consumption. In the United States, foodborne illnesses remain a persistent public health challenge, driven by factors such as industrialized food production, globalized supply chains, antimicrobial resistance, and evolving consumer behaviors. As a result, food safety has increasingly become an area where scientific practices, regulatory oversight, and policy interventions intersect. This article examines the role of food safety practices and policy interventions in reducing public health risks in the US. It evaluates how preventive controls, hazard analysis systems, surveillance programs, and inspection regimes contribute to mitigating foodborne pathogens and chemical hazards. Particular emphasis is placed on the integration of science-based standards, risk assessment frameworks, and data-driven monitoring systems that inform regulatory decision-making and enforcement. The analysis highlights how coordinated efforts between federal agencies, state authorities, industry stakeholders, and public health institutions translate policy into practical risk reduction measures. The discussion further narrows to assess the effectiveness of major policy interventions in improving compliance, strengthening accountability, and enhancing outbreak detection and response. Challenges related to regulatory fragmentation, disparities in enforcement capacity, and the need for continuous adaptation to emerging risks are also explored. By focusing on the US context, the article illustrates how robust food safety governance supported by evidence-based practices and responsive policy design plays a vital role in protecting public health. The findings underscore that sustained investment in food safety infrastructure, workforce capacity, and regulatory innovation is essential for reducing preventable illness, maintaining consumer confidence, and safeguarding population health.
