In recent years, performance reporting has emerged as a powerful tool for enhancing quality, accountability, and responsiveness within health sciences education. With more pressure placed by accreditation authorities, governments, learners, and healthcare systems, conventional performance reports that focus on retrospective data and compliance have become outdated. This paper reviews the development of the performance reporting systems of the health sciences institutions and discusses how digital transformation, data governance and benchmarking can be enhanced for educational excellence at institutional and national levels. There is growing evidence on the move from indicators related to input such as physical infrastructure or ratio of teachers to competencies measured in terms of learning outcomes of students and their success in professional life after graduation. Learning management systems, digital dashboards, predictive analytics and open database systems provide excellent opportunities for real-time monitoring and evidence-informed decision-making. Nonetheless, significant challenges persist, especially in low- and middle-income nations, where the disjointedness of systems, inadequate infrastructure, and poor governance impede implementation. Robust policy attention is further needed to address ethical issues of privacy, fairness and data ownership. According to the review, performance reporting may be effective when it standardizes indicators, interoperable technologies and commitment of leaders to use data. A robust reporting system will improve the curriculum, prepare for accreditation, plan the workforce, and more. In the future, researchers should longitudinally evaluate, cost-effectively model and scale these initiatives in resource-poor settings across the globe.
